As a Visual Artist, the work I do is varied and has two strands, very different from each other. My personal artistic vision and practice is solitary. It explores the poetry and metaphysical beauty of the night sky, which is magnificent in the absence of artificial light. I travel to "Dark Sky" designated areas throughout Canada, where I work on location, using a telescope to observe stars, the moon or celestial events - the subjects of my compositions. As astronomers assign letters and numbers to identify newly discovered stars and other celestial bodies, I created a similar system to catalog my drawings, including in some cases, a mnemonic name or description for each one. The night sky can be a backdrop for human emotion, a fascinating metaphor, with the movement of stars, planets, moons and other celestial entities mirroring aspects of human behavior . The earth is called "mother". Suns are classed as "dwarfs" or "giants". Stars are born and die, living a lifespan measured not in decades, but billions of years. Moons never cede from their planets, planets cannot escape their stars, and galaxies move in ways determined by the physical laws that exceed them. This connection between light and darkness is the primary focus of my drawings. The intimate and imperious night sky poses a challenge to human understanding, and provides a space for the expansion of human knowledge and our place in the universe. Parallel to my private practice and personal artistic vision, I am a community mural artist. This type of work is created for, and often created by members of various, often needful communities. I make outdoor murals in neighborhoods and public spaces such as parks, on public buildings, street corners and other areas with high public visibility. In general, because I have been a public service worker for Toronto Public Library for many years, I am at home with public service, and find it to be very rewarding. Specifically, as an artist, however, I find public mural painting to be particularly rewarding , because those who engage in the creation of these murals can find such joy and empowerment in working on such projects, and I have a part in that. Especially, these collaborations enhance and build trust in neighborhoods, and foster self-esteem through community engagement. They are invaluable assets to our society and can offer joy and satisfaction to those who participate, and I always feel privileged to take part in such community projects when opportunities arise. |
