"Hesse’s drawings, which are often very, very small, are of deep, coal-black skies, animated by comets, shooting stars, lunar eclipses and other celestial events of the night. Hectically romantic in spirit – though carefully and indeed, meticulously rendered – they are magic casements, windows thrown open to wonder. " Excerpt: The Globe and Mail, Gallery Going, Gary Michael Dault
My work as a visual Artist is about the poetry and metaphysical beauty of the night sky, magnificent in the absence of artificial light.
I travel to "Dark Sky" designated areas throughout Canada, where I work on location, using a telescope to observe stars, the moon or celestial events - the subjects of my compositions. As astronomers assign letters and numbers to identify newly discovered stars and other celestial bodies, I created a similar system to catalog my drawings, including in some cases, a mnemonic name or description for each one.
The night sky can be a backdrop for human emotion and is a metaphor, with the movement of stars, planets, moons and other celestial entities mirroring aspects of human behavior . By this, I am referring to intrinsic similarity of design or psyche. The earth is called "mother". Suns are classed as "dwarfs" or "giants". Stars are born and die, living a lifespan measured not in decades, but billions of years. Moons never cede from their planets, planets cannot escape their stars, and galaxies move in ways determined by the physical laws that exceed them.
The connection between light and darkness is the primary focus of my work. Simultaneously intimate and imperious, the night sky poses a challenge to human understanding, and provides a space for the expansion of human knowledge and our place in the universe.
